World Day of the Sick

World Day of the Sick is always on February 11, the feast of “Our Lady of Lourdes” in the Catholic Liturgical Calendar. SPH will highlight the day throughout this week.

Pope John Paul II had a strong belief that God could use even suffering and illness to bring about goodness. This was based largely in his own personal experience. In 1980, he was shot in St. Peter’s Square and spent some weeks in recovery. In 1991 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In 1992 he proclaimed World Day of the Sick.
