Cherie Kapell Brown, Manager – 5A Surgery (Vascular & Thoracic) and Ambulatory Care

Dear Friends,

Can you imagine if your bed – a place of comfort and security – gave you a serious condition that is painful, debilitating, embarrassing and even life-threatening?

Unfortunately, this is the reality for many of our patients in the department I work in. In 5A Surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital, 40-80% of our patients who are resting in hospital beds today are at risk of skin breakdown, commonly known as bedsores.

Most of us have heard of bedsores but what many don’t know is that they can lead to wounds which cause pain and even deformity. Bedsores are often the culprit responsible for longer hospital stays, and decreased quality of life. You can understand why I want to change this for our patients.

The good news is you can help change this immediately!

I need your help so we can purchase Versacare P500 ‘specialty surface’ beds which prevent and heal bedsores. As a part of the St. Paul’s caring community will you please bring patients the compassionate relief of a specialty bed? A very kind contribution from you will give our hardworking nurses this important tool to care for patients. It’s such a wonderful way to make a meaningful gift of healing and comfort this Christmas. You can help ease the pain and bring healing to a patient like “Anne” who recently came to hospital with bedsores. This amazing bed helped increase blood flow, and allowed Anne to heal faster and return home to her worried family much sooner.

I’m proud we were able to provide compassionate, comforting care for Anne, but I think about all the other patients who need your help to bring the healing technology of a specialty bed to St. Paul’s. Will you help our hospital purchase the specialty beds we need to make sure we can offer the same care for each and every patient who needs one?

In a way, it will be a Christmas present to yourself, too. Just imagine how good it will feel knowing that your gift will be preventing injuries like bedsores that cause severe pain, infection, embarrassment and sometimes even death. When you decide to make a special holiday gift today, you’ll be giving comfort to patients like Anne and offer healing rest to hundreds of others.

It’s incredible! But we can’t do it without your support. Will you make the decision to help today?

Thank you for your wonderful support and for giving a big dose of relief to our patients during the holiday season.

Merry Christmas and wishes for a healthy New Year,

P.S. Your generous Christmas gift will ensure St. Paul’s can reach the goal of seven new specialty beds to improve patient healing and reduce wait lists. Thank you for sharing in the spirit of the season and helping my team offer the best care available for their patients.
