The GreenLight Laser XPS 

A new GreenLight Laser XPS at St. Paul’s Hospital will bring the latest advancements in urological care to the Leslie and Irene Dubé Urology Centre of Health at St. Paul’s Hospital. 

Nearly all men will have enlargement of their prostate at some time in their lives, a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It is most common after the age of 50 and becomes more common as men age further. Physical problems can include having to pass urine very often, not being able to control the flow of urine and the feeling that the bladder is not empty after urine has been passed. It can also become enlarged to point where men are not able to pass urine at all.

If the blockage is severe, surgery is required. Surgical treatments currently in place are either a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) at St. Paul’s Hospital or a GreenLight Laser procedure at City Hospital.

With over 222 TURP procedures done each year at St. Paul’s Hospital, a GreenLight Laser at our Hospital could do much to advance patient care.

A new GreenLight Laser XPS at St. Paul's Hospital will:

• Advance Care: Research demonstrates that there is lower risk of bleeding with GreenLight Laser than TURP, so it can be used on patients who are treated with blood thinners. This means fewer post-operative complications resulting in faster recovery times, shorter hospital stays, fewer post-operative procedures, and higher patient satisfaction.
• Advance Treatment Options: Having a GreenLight Laser XPS at St. Paul’s will also provide critical post-operative medical attention to acute patients.
• Improve Access to Services: Because most of the urology cases are managed through the Leslie and Irene Dubé Urology Centre of Health, the addition of a GreenLight Laser XPS to St. Paul’s Hospital will mean that patients at our Hospital have access to this technology, which may also result in fewer patient trips to the hospital.
• Reduce Wait Times: With two GreenLight Lasers in our city, wait times for this procedure will be significantly reduced. As an acute care Hospital, St. Paul’s regularly schedules many hours of surgery in our operating rooms, so having our own GreenLight Laser XPS will allow us to schedule more surgical procedures in our Hospital when necessary.
